A Single Device for Work and Play?

Melbourne based technology consultant, Megan Lemma, was on a mission. She was out prove that you could run a business for 30 days from just one mobile device – in her case, a tablet.

With so many people now owning three devices – a smartphone, tablet & work laptop – she’s not the first person who’s considered downsizing.

But is it really possible? Are smartphones and/or tablets, and the apps they offer, now good enough to oust the laptop?

Lemma thinks so. “My iPad is my primary device” Lemma says, adding “mobile devices and the applications on them are becoming better and better”.

The biggest challenge over the 30 days, she said, was editing Microsoft office documents such as Word, Powerpoint and Excel. To combat this, she downloaded a free app called CloudOn, a Microsoft Office editor, allowing her to edit docs (as long as they’re in Dropbox).

Lemma admits that Apps don’t have the same functionality as desktop ones, however for many type of small businesses, such as tradespeople, they’re good enough to make the switch.

She encourages uses of cloud based Apps such as Dropbox, Evernote, If This Then That (IFTTT).

With so many Apps out there, we encourage trying 2 or 3 different ones until you find the one that works best for your business.

Here at Chargebar, we use Google Drive (instead of Dropbox), Google Apps (for mail & calendar) and Google Docs (documents, presentations and worksheets).

What do you think? Is the world ready to ditch the laptop?
